Dard Hunter and Dard Hunter Jr. collection of decorated paper bindings

    Manuscripts

This collection contains research material, presumably compiled by Dard Hunter, Jr., about decorated paper-making. The research material consists of images of the covers and title page of books, which are accompanied by identifying notes and drawings of paper patterns and have small samples of the original papers attached in many cases. The majority of these books are German-language publications from Pennsylviana from the mid-18th to mid-19th centuries. The notes and correspondence, when dated, indicate that the research was taking place on or around 1954. There are also about one hundred loose paper samples and five manuscripts, presumably collected for their decorated covers.

[Scrapbook of decorated paper from Giuseppe Rizzi]

    Rare Books

Bound scrapbook of samples of decorated paper, or Carta de Varese, printed from original woodblocks in different colored inks. The woodblocks were used by the Remondini family of Bassano. In 1902 the family licensed Giuseppe Rizzi, an antique dealer from Varese, to use the original blocks in production of decorated paper. Dard Hunter acquired this sample book from Giuseppe's son Cesare in 1924. The production of Carta de Varese ceased in 1939 when Cesare Rizzi died. Leaves numbered in outer right corner 501-3003, but many numbers missing.
